What Does a Professional Mermaid Actually Do?

Before we talk about how to become a professional mermaid, let's talk about what that actually looks like day to day, because the answer might surprise you.

Most people picture a mermaid at a children's birthday party, and yes, that's absolutely a part of the professional mermaid world. But the career paths available to a skilled mermaid performer today go far beyond pool parties.

Aquarium Performances This is one of the most coveted professional mermaid roles. Aquarium mermaids swim in large exhibit tanks surrounded by real marine life, performing choreographed routines, interacting with audiences through the glass, and sometimes even doing live educational shows. These roles are competitive and typically require SCUBA certification, strong breath-hold ability, and a professional-grade silicone tail from a recognized maker.

Film and TV Silicone mermaid tails are the industry standard for film and television productions, they're what gives that iconic, hyper-realistic on-screen look. Working in this space means collaborating with production crews, performing stunts, holding positions for extended underwater shots, and sometimes working with underwater camera teams in open water. It's demanding work, but it's also some of the most exciting and well-compensated work available to mermaid performers.

Events and Entertainment Luxury corporate events, celebrity parties, resort appearances, themed dinners, brand activations, mermaids are in high demand across the high-end event industry. This type of work rewards mermaids who can hold a character effortlessly, interact warmly with guests, and look flawless doing it.

Underwater Modeling and Photography Underwater photography has exploded as an art form and commercial medium, and professional mermaids are at the heart of it. This work requires excellent breath control, body awareness, and the ability to hold beautiful, expressive positions while fully submerged. A stunning silicone tail makes an enormous difference in the quality of these shoots.

Teaching and Instruction One of the most sustainable and scalable ways to build a professional mermaid career is through teaching. Certified mermaid instructors can run group classes, private lessons, and retreats, building a loyal community while creating a steady income stream that doesn't rely entirely on performance bookings.

Content Creation and Brand Partnership For mermaids with a social media presence and a strong visual brand, content creation and brand partnerships can become a significant income stream alongside (or even instead of) live performance work.

The best part? You don't have to choose just one. Most working professional mermaids combine multiple streams and that combination is what turns a passion into a sustainable career.

Step 1: Build Your Foundation in the Water

Every professional mermaid career starts in the same place: the water.

Before anything else, you need to be a genuinely strong, confident swimmer. Not just comfortable in the pool, strong. Mermaiding demands core strength, dolphin kick technique, breath control, and the ability to stay calm and graceful under pressure. If you're not already there, this is your first priority.

Master the Dolphin Kick This is the engine of mermaiding. The dolphin kick is a full-body undulation that flows from your chest through your hips and into your tail…and doing it beautifully takes real practice. Start without a tail, work on it with a monofin, then progress to a full tail. Your knees should have a soft bend but should not be driving the movement. Power comes from the core and hips.

Work on Your Breath Hold Professional mermaid work often demands sustained, controlled breath holds, especially for aquarium and film work. Start building this skill gradually and safely, always with a buddy present. Many professional mermaids supplement their training with formal freediving courses, which teach relaxation techniques, diaphragm breathing, and safe breath-hold protocols.

Build Your Core Strength Everything in mermaiding flows from your core. Regular dry-land training — Pilates, yoga, swimming drills — will dramatically improve your in-water performance and reduce fatigue during long performance days.

Step 2: Get Certified

Certifications are your professional credibility, and some of them are genuinely required for the best mermaid jobs.

PADI or SSI Mermaid Certification PADI and SSI both offer structured mermaid programs that take you from beginner all the way through to professional instructor level. These internationally recognized certifications cover safe mermaiding technique, breath-hold skills, equipment use, and performance in both pool and open water environments. If you're serious about a professional career, getting certified through one of these programs is an invaluable step.

Freediving Certification For aquarium work, film production, and open water performance, a freediving certification (PADI, SSI, or AIDA) is often required or strongly preferred. Freediving training develops the safety skills and breath-hold capacity that professional-level mermaiding demands.

SCUBA Certification Many aquarium mermaid roles specifically require SCUBA certification, because performers often work on hookah lines or air regulators that allow them to stay submerged for extended shows. Having your SCUBA cert opens doors that would otherwise stay closed. Both Michael and I are Dive Instructors and found this to be VERY helpful with mermaiding!

CPR and First Aid Non-negotiable for any professional working in or around water. Many venues require this, and it's simply the responsible thing to have.

Performer Insurance As you start taking paid bookings, you'll need liability insurance. This is standard practice in the professional entertainment world and some clients and venues will require proof of coverage before booking you.

Step 3: Develop Your Mersona

Here's where the real magic happens.

A mersona is your mermaid character, the persona you become when you're in the water. Think of professional mermaids as improv actors who happen to also be elite swimmers. Your mersona shapes everything: your name, your color palette, your tail design, your storytelling, the way you interact with guests, the energy you bring to a photoshoot.

Your mersona should feel like an extension of who you are, authentic, specific, and memorable. A few things to define:

  • Your mermaid name — something that rolls off the tongue and feels genuinely mythical

  • Your color story — the palette that runs through your tail, your top, your hair, your makeup

  • Your personality — are you mysterious and ethereal? Playful and enchanting? Wise and oceanic?

  • Your backstory — where do you come from? What brings you to the surface?

A strong, consistent mersona is what makes you bookable. Clients, whether they're hiring you for a children's party or a luxury resort residency, want a character, not just a swimmer. Build yours with intention.

Step 4: Invest in Professional-Grade Equipment

Your tail is your most important professional tool, and the difference between a professional-grade silicone tail and an entry-level fabric tail is visible from the moment you enter the water.

For most professional mermaid roles, particularly aquarium work, film and TV, and high-end event performance, a custom silicone tail is either required or strongly expected. Professional venues like Landrys and Ripleys aquariums specifically require performers to wear a silicone mermaid tail from a recognized maker, with no fabric or neoprene tails permitted.

A professional silicone tail delivers:

  • Unmatched realism on camera and in person — the scale texture, the movement, the shimmer

  • Custom fit to your exact measurements, which means better swimming performance and comfort during long booking days

  • Durability that withstands repeated professional use

  • The signal to clients, aquariums, and production companies that you are a serious professional

At MerNation Studios, we specialize in crafting custom professional silicone tails for working performers built to your design, your measurements, and your career. We developed our tails while working full time at an aquairum as a professional mermaid, so you KNOW they are built to last. Your tail should be as unique as your mersona, and as reliable as you are.

Beyond your tail, invest in:

  • A quality monofin suited to your swimming style

  • A well-fitted silicone or performance top that photographs beautifully and stays secure during active swimming

  • A waterproof camera or housing for capturing content

  • A professional carry bag for transporting and protecting your tail

Step 5: Build Your Portfolio

Before clients can book you, they need to see you, and that means building a portfolio that showcases your skills, your character, and your professionalism.

Photography Invest in at least one proper underwater photoshoot with a skilled photographer. Beautiful underwater images are your most powerful marketing tool. Make sure your full tail is visible, your expression is strong, and your mersona comes through clearly.

Video Demo Reel A short, well-edited video showing your swimming technique, your performance range, and your character is invaluable when pitching for gigs, especially aquarium and film work. Include tricks like spins, flips, bubble rings, and interactions with the camera.

Online Presence Build a professional Instagram and/or website for your mersona. Consistency matters, use the same name, the same color palette, the same energy across every platform. Engage with the mermaid community genuinely, and your audience will grow.

Step 6: Find Your First Gigs

Everyone starts somewhere and the professional mermaid community is, on the whole, a wonderfully supportive one.

Start local. Reach out to local event companies, children's entertainment agencies, and luxury venues in your area. Send a polished introduction email, your portfolio, and a brief overview of your services and pricing.

Connect with booking agencies. There are several established agencies that book professional mermaid performers across the US — connecting with them can provide a reliable stream of gigs, especially while you're building your independent client base.

Join the community. The mermaid world has a vibrant online and in-person community. Connect with other professional mermaids, attend conventions and retreats, and learn from those who've been doing this longer than you. This community is genuinely generous with knowledge.

Set your rates and stick to them. Professional mermaid performers can earn anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a local event appearance to several thousand for a high-end venue or production booking. Know your worth, price your services accordingly, and be prepared to articulate the value of what you bring.

Step 7: Keep Growing

The best professional mermaids never stop learning. They refine their technique, expand their certifications, develop new performance skills, build their brand, and push the boundaries of what mermaiding can look like.

Consider adding advanced freediving qualifications, underwater dance training, or mermaid instructor certifications to your repertoire over time. Diversify your income streams. Build relationships with underwater photographers and videographers. Stay curious about the industry and where it's heading.

And whatever stage of the journey you're at — remember that every legendary professional mermaid started exactly where you are now.

The Right Gear Makes All the Difference
